To Follow or Not to Follow

You’ve said yes to the love of your life and now you’re ready to plan the wedding of your dreams. But wait, there’s a catch. You have to follow a bunch of rules and traditions that may or may not make sense to you. Do you really have to wear white? Do you have to invite your third cousin twice removed? Do you have to toss the bouquet and the garter? Do you have to have a cake cutting ceremony and a first dance?

The answer is: No, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. It’s your wedding, after all, and you should make it reflect your personality, style, and preferences. Of course, there may be some expectations from your family, friends, or culture that you may want to consider or respect, but ultimately, the decision is yours.

Here are some pros and cons of following or not following standard wedding protocol.

Pros of following standard wedding protocol:

  • You can avoid conflict or disappointment from your loved ones who may have certain expectations or traditions that they want you to follow.

  • You can save time and energy by not having to come up with alternative ideas or explain your choices to others.

  • You can enjoy the familiarity and comfort of doing things that have been done for generations and that have a symbolic meaning or significance.

  • You can honor your heritage or culture by incorporating elements that reflect your roots or identity.

Cons of following standard wedding protocol:

  • You may feel bored or restricted by doing things that everyone else does and that don’t reflect your personality or style.

  • You may waste money or resources on things that you don’t really care about or enjoy, such as a cake that you don’t like, a dress that you don’t feel comfortable in, or favors that nobody wants.

  • You may miss out on the opportunity to express yourself creatively or uniquely by doing something different or unexpected that surprises and delights your guests.

  • You may regret not having the wedding that you truly wanted or dreamed of because you were too afraid to break the rules or upset someone.

Pros of not following standard wedding protocol:

  • You can have fun and be yourself by doing things that make you happy and that showcase your personality, style, and preferences.

  • You can save money and resources by only spending on things that matter to you and that add value to your wedding experience.

  • You can create a memorable and unique wedding that stands out from the rest and that reflects your story and vision.

  • You can challenge the norms and stereotypes that may limit or oppress you or others by doing something unconventional or unconventional.

Cons of not following standard wedding protocol:

  • You may face criticism or backlash from your loved ones who may not understand or appreciate your choices or who may feel offended or excluded by them.

  • You may spend more time and energy by having to research and plan alternative ideas or justify your choices to others.

  • You may lose the meaning or significance of some traditions that may have a deeper or historical value or relevance.

  • You may alienate some guests who may not feel comfortable or welcome at your wedding if they don’t know what to expect or how to behave.

As you can see, there are advantages and disadvantages of following or not following standard wedding protocol. The key is to find a balance that works for you and your partner, and that respects your values and wishes. Remember, it’s your wedding, not anyone else’s, so do what makes you happy. And don’t forget to have fun!
